Mr.Phaithoon Kaeothong, Minister of Labour (MOL), is concerned with the expiry of work permit of the fugitive-alien workers, who have immigrated into Thailand from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. The MOL has, hence, requested assistance from all employers hiring fugitively-alien workers to immediately file an application for proving citizenship of those workers, along with concurrently renewing the work permit license. The completed deadline is on February 28, 2010. Mr. Pongsak Plengsang, MOL Political Spokesman stated that the systematization of the fugitive-alien labours from Myammar, Cambodia, and Laos, is an effort to make fugitive worker into legal workers. Nationality verification is a useful process to give existing workers the opportunities to continue working and to also minimize the impact on employers. Some countries have used the method of closing the country and then immediately deporting workers out of the country. Thailand experienced this, in the case of illegally immigrating labours to Singapore 20 years ago. Therefore, the current government and the Ministry of Labour have chosen the option that will least affect all parties. The political spokesman continuously said that Nationality verification, which is still being processed by Thai government, will cause Thailand to step away from trade accusation, blaming that Thailand allows child labour, forced labour, as well as trafficked labour. Meanwhile, establishment of social governance will get rid of the graft from the system management of alien workers, which is part of the corruption in Thai society. |
